_UK Border Agency (UKBA)
The UK Border Agency (UKBA) is the border control agency of the UK government and an executive agency of the Home Office. The Criminal Casework Directorate (CCD) of UKBA is the section of the agency that considers deportation action for foreign nationals that meet the published thresholds for deportation.
HM Prison Service
There are more than 130 prisons in England and Wales. Currently, the majority of these are run by the public sector through HM Prison Service, although the management of some are contracted to private sector companies.
Independent Chief Inspector of the UK Border Agency
The Independent Chief Inspector of the UK Border Agency assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of the UK Border Agency. Areas for inspection include practice and procedure in making decisions, the treatment of claimants and applicants, enforcement powers, and the handling of complaints.
HM Inspectorate of Prisons
HM Inspectorate of Prisons is an independent inspectorate which reports on conditions for and treatment of those in prison, young offender institutions and immigration detention facilities.
Prisons and Probation Ombudsman
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman investigates complaints from prisoners, those on probation and those held in immigration removal centres. The Ombudsman also investigates all deaths that occur among prisoners, immigration detainees and the residents of probation hostels.
Independent Monitoring Boards (IMBs)
There are Independent Monitoring Boards (IMBS) in every prison and immigration removal centre, and in some short term holding facilities at airports. IMB members are independent and unpaid, and their role is to monitor the day-to-day life in their local prison or removal centre and ensure that proper standards of care and decency are maintained.
The Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC)
The Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC) is responsible for regulating immigration advisers by ensuring they are fit and competent and act in the best interest of their clients. The OISC's key responsibilities include: regulating immigration advisers; promoting good practice by setting standards; accepting and addressing complaints about anyone giving immigration advice; and prosecuting those who operate outside of the law.
