Annual conference 2012

Picture
'Foreign national prisoners - Meeting the challenges ahead', our 20th anniversary conference, took place on Monday 17th September 2012 at the Congress Centre in London.

Rob Whiteman, Chief Executive of UKBA, Pat Baskerville, Head of Offender Safety, Rights and Responsibilities at NOMS, Martin Kettle, Policy Lead for Foreign National Prisoners, HM Inspectorate of Prisons, and Juliet Lyon, Director of the Prison Reform Trust, gave presentations at the conference.

The conference also included workshops run by DAS, the Immigration Law Practitioners' Association (ILPA), Bail for Immigration Detainees (BID) and Detention Action. The final panel discussion of the day, on 'What changes are needed for foreign national prisoners?', included contributions from DAS, ILPA, BID, Detention Action, and FPWP Hibiscus, and was chaired by Jon Robins, a freelance journalist who runs The Justice Gap website.

Jon wrote about the conference for the Guardian: you can read his article here. We also wrote about the conference, and the issues arising from it, for The Justice Gap, here. The full conference report is available to read here.
